Tapu Gapak joined NEHU College of Agriculture in August 1979 and completed his B.Sc. (Agriculture) degree from the College of Agriculture (NEHU), Medziphema, in June 1984. He began his government service in July 1984 as a Horticulture Inspector in the Agriculture Department, where he served for three and a half years. In 1987, he joined the Forest Department as Assistant Conservator of Forest through the APPSC examination and underwent two years of training at the State Forest Service College, Byrnihat, Assam. He served as Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) for ten years. Tapu Gapak was inducted into the Indian Forest Service (IFS) in 2005. He was subsequently promoted to Conservator of Forests in 2019 and to Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) in January 2023. He retired as CCF in June 2023.
